What is J’ouvert?
J’ouvert (pronounced joo-veh, from the French for “daybreak”) is a vibrant Caribbean tradition that marks the official start of Carnival. It takes place in the early morning hours, often before sunrise, as a joyful celebration of freedom, resilience, and cultural pride.
It’s a time when people come together in the streets, wearing white or old clothes, ready to get messy with paint, powder, mud, and water while dancing to the infectious rhythms of soca, calypso, steelpan, and drums.
J’ouvert is not just a party — it’s an experience that invites everyone to let go of inhibitions, embrace the energy of the moment, and celebrate life with others in a spirit of unity.
Why We Celebrate

J’ouvert has its roots in the emancipation of enslaved Africans in the Caribbean. After gaining their freedom, people celebrated by taking to the streets before dawn, covered in oil, paint, or mud as symbols of equality and resistance to colonial rules.
Over time, it became a central part of Carnival, embodying the joy, creativity, and defiance of Caribbean people. It’s a reminder of our shared history and the power of cultural traditions to bring people together.
